The Patriots’ decision to release Cam Newton means Mac Jones is officially the guy in New England. Here are three teams that still use the former MVP.

Cam Newton is officially a free agent after being released by the Patriots. That’s good news for Mac Jones, but the transaction can also benefit several NFL teams that still need help to strengthen their options at the game’s most important position.

Newton’s big personality isn’t a fit everywhere and he doesn’t possess the same level of talent that he did during his prime with the Panthers. Nonetheless, the following three teams could really benefit from adding Newton to their quarterback room.

3. Ravens: Cam Newton can backup Lamar Jackson

It’s unclear whether or not Newton has any interest in being a backup, but the Ravens absolutely should be interested in signing him to work behind Lamar Jackson. Adding Newton would allow Baltimore’s offensive coaching staff to maintain the same sort of offensive system even if Jackson is forced to miss time due to injury.

The Ravens could even play around with the idea of using Newton as a gadget option in short-yardage situations. That would save valuable wear and tear on Jackson when the team is determined to run the ball. Taking a dynamic talent like Jackson off the field too often would be a mistake, but Newton’s physical running ability makes it an intriguing option for Baltimore.

John Harbaugh is also the sort of tough-minded coach that can get the most out of Newton at this late stage of his career. The former NFL MVP might not be willing to settle for a backup role, but ring chasing in Baltimore could benefit everyone involved.
