Barcelona looking to renew Ronald Koeman’s contract

After a tumultuous first year in charge, Barcelona may extend manager Ronald Koeman’s stay at the club. His contract runs until the end of this season, but the club may sign him to a longer deal.

First reported by Spanish journalist Adrià Albets, the club will decide based on an evaluation of Koeman. His ability to develop youth talent, win trophies in the near future, and his tactics are all aspects under examination by the Barca board.

Last season remains one of the club’s worst in years. Along with a dismal 3rd place finish, the team’s financial problems and debt came to light. Additionally, they lost club legend Lionel Messi over the summer transfer window.

While Koeman inherited a horrible situation, he didn’t seem to improve upon it. Unfortunately for him, he came to the club after one of its darkest days. That 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League marked the beginning of the end for the Catalonian side.

Problems only accentuated from there as Messi asked for help in the transfer market and received none. This led to reports of his unhappiness at the club.

While many of Barca’s problems are simply out of Koeman’s control, many criticized his hiring in the first place. He never coached a club the size of Barcelona, and his last club job was with Everton in 2017.

Hopefully, this year proves to be a better one for the club. With Messi gone, a gaping hole was left in the squad. Koeman did his best in the transfer market, bringing in Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, and Sergio Aguero. However, the transfer deadline day saw Antoine Griezmann return to Atletico Madrid.

Additionally, multiple players, including Gerard Pique, took pay cuts for the club. Not really the best look in terms of attracting new players.

With no managers currently lined up, a renewal for Koeman looks the likeliest option for the club. After the roller coaster ride that was last season, stability is a must at the club. Koeman can do exactly that with a bit of luck, but probably not much more with the current squad.
