Buchanan, David power Canada past El Salvador in World Cup qualifying

Tajon Buchanan, Jonathan David and Atiba Hutchinson scored as Canada earned a convincing 3-0 victory over El Salvador in World Cup qualifying.

Canada didn’t waste any time getting on the board as Richie Laryea found a streaking Hutchinson who put the ball past goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez. Minutes later, Canada would increase its lead to 2-0 as Buchanan’s placed a perfect volley into the box for David to finish off with a header.

Buchanan would give Canada a 3-0 cushion after David picked off the ball and set up the New England Revolution star for the goal.

Canada was playing without Alphonso Davies, who returned to Germany to recover from an injury he suffered against the United States.

This is Canada’s first victory in the final round of qualifying in Concacaf after drawing the U.S. and Honduras in their first two matches. Canada’s 14-game Octagonal schedule continues next month with away games at No. 9 Mexico and No. 50 Jamaica before an Oct. 13 home date against No. 74 Panama at BMO Field.

The top three finishers will book their ticket to Qatar 2022, representing North and Central America and the Caribbean, while the fourth-place team moves on to an intercontinental playoff to see who joins them.
