Can UNC cover vs. Virginia Tech?

Friday night college football picks against the spread can be tricky, especially when they involve a test for UNC playing at Virginia Tech.

It may not be a college football Saturday just yet, but Friday has plenty of action to whet the appetite.

Between North Carolina vs. Virginia Tech and Michigan State vs. Northwestern, the slate of games should be worth the watch.

Friday night college football picks against the spread

North Carolina (-5.5) at Virginia Tech

Duke (-6.5) at Charlotte

Old Dominion at Wake Forest (-31.5)

St. Francis PA at Eastern Michigan (-34.0)

South Dakota at Kansas (-11.5)

Michigan State at Northwestern (-3.0)

Northern Colorado at Colorado (-38.0)

South Dakota State at Colorado State (-2.5)

A team like North Carolina won’t have it easy at Virginia Tech, but quarterback Sam Howell should be good enough to carry his team to a touchdown lead.

Other spreads are more tricky. Wake Forest and Eastern Michigan would have to completely outpace the opposition to cover. Both have proven capable of that, though.

Contrast that with Colorado. A 38-point spread is a tough cover even if you dominate a team. In their last meeting, the Buffaloes bested Northern Colorado by 20 points. Expecting them to come out with a win that big despite a new quarterback is a step too far.

As for Northwestern, Kansas and Colorado State, siding with the home squad in a season opener feels safe.
