CSK Playing XI vs RCB IPL 2021: No place for Sam Curran in CSK XI – Josh Hazlewood’s availability has given MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings a selection headache in IPL 2021 Phase 2. With Sam Curran out of quarantine and Josh Hazlewood doing well in bowling, as they move to Sharjah, a graveyard for the bowlers, the team management is in a conundrum about who should they pick for the clash against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday.

Had the match been played at Dubai International Stadium, MS Dhoni would have picked the same XI with Josh Hazlewood leading the pace attack without a moment of hesitation. But Sharjah’s flat pitch and shorter boundaries will need greater batting depth to deal with. That is where Sam Curran becomes a discussion. The English bowling all-rounder has shown his batting ability time and again while Josh Hazlewood has only displayed his bowling skills.

CSK Playing XI vs RCB IPL 2021: The Australian’s highest score in all formats combined is just 43 while Sam Curran has 18 First Class half-centuries, 6 fifties in T20s and a half-century in IPL. Clearly, Sam Curran is the better batsman amongst the two and considering the pitch where 200+ scores in T20s are the norm as witnessed in IPL 2020, CSK will need all 11 players to bat with MS Dhoni out of form.

In all likelihood, Josh Hazlewood will retain his spot and Sam Curran will have to wait for his chance. The batting heaven will need a specialist pacer who can restrict the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell and Devdutt Padikkal.

  • The flat track at Sharjah is a challenge for all bowlers and Josh Hazlewood could be an asset in restricting RCB to a total that could be chased.
  • Hazlewood is a proven superstar bowler with 212 Test wickets and 57 T20 wickets at an average of 24.10.
  • As for Sam Curran, he too has done well in bowling but was a tad bit expensive in Phase 1 while he is not coming with a good run of form.
  • In the Test series against England, Curran struggled and bagged only three wickets in as many matches.

As for other positions, Chennai Super Kings will not tinker with the winning combination and keep them intact barring any late injuries. However, the injury condition of Ambati Rayudu will be one. The batsman had suffered a bruised arm in the match against MI. Although Stephen Fleming said it was nothing to worry about and further X-ray showed no fracture, he could be rested to fully recover giving a chance to Robin Uthappa who has been kept on standby.
