Hungary vs England Prediction: World Cup Qualifying Match on 02.09.2021

England’s target of winning a first major trophy since 1966 saw them eventually come up short at the EUROs in heartbreaking fashion, but all the attention swiftly turns to the World Cup in just over 12 months time. Hungary are the opponents for the Three Lions in the first of three qualifiers over the next seven days.

World Cup Qualifier Preview

It’s fair to say that England run to the final of the EUROs was fully embraced by the home support. However, that run eventually saw them come up short, as they were beaten by Italy in the final of the competition. Regardless, there were no shortage of standout moments from that run, which included a famous Wembley victory against Germany, England’s biggest knockout win in history against Ukraine, and a semi-final success for the first time since 1966. That must all now be used as preparation for the World Cup in Qatar, but before the competition gets underway, the Three Lions must qualify. They already look to have one foot in the competition after three wins from three so far. Among those wins was a 2-1 success against Poland at Wembley, as Harry Kane and Harry Maguire scored the goals.

Hungary look to be in direct competition with Poland for the second spot in the group, as they opened their campaign with two wins and a draw. They were held by Poland in the opening game, before wins against San Marino and Andorra have put them into a promising position. Confidence will be high within the camp, as they narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout stage of the EUROs after a pulsating finish in their group of death. After taking a point against France, a win would have been enough to put them through. They led Germany after an Andras Schafer goal, but their hearts were broken six minutes from time as Leon Goretzka equalised for the Germans.

Hungary vs England Head to Head

Hungary have beaten England on just five occasions in 22 meetings. Their last win against England came back in the 1962 World Cup. England have won five of the previous six matches between the nations, with their most recent win coming in an international friendly in 2010.

Hungary vs England Prediction

Hungary were certainly far more competitive than many would have believed at the EUROs, but England are currently in the midst of their brightest generation in over 50 years. The Three Lions should take another stride towards the World Cup with another win.
