Huskies Start at Marist Season Opener

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s cross country team will get their season underway on Saturday morning when they run in the Marist Season Opener.  The Huskies will race in the season opening event at Vassar Farms in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. with the women’s race stepping off at 9 am.

The Huskies enter the fall with a wealth of experience on their roster coming off a shortened season that took place during February and March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Earlier this week, UConn found themselves at the top of the 2021 USTFCCCA regional preseason poll for the northeast region while also making their way into the national preseason poll coming in at No. 23.

UConn had three races last seasons, capped by an impressive return to the BIG EAST with a second place finish at the title race.  The Huskies gave champion Georgetown all they could handle on Friday, finishing just two points behind the Hoyas for the top-spot.  The Huskies top-four finished fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth to garner All-BIG EAST honors. 

Leading the way senior Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) who was fifth with a time of 20:50.8.  Sophomore Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Con..) had her best finish of last season with a sixth-place spot in a time of 20:51.2.  Senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) rounded out the Huskies all-conference picks with a ninth-place finish n 20:55.4.  Senior Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) took 21st at last year’s BIG EAST race with a time of 21:13.2.

After this weekend’s opener the Huskies stay in the northeast with a pair of races in Massachusetts.  UConn heads to the UMass Invitational on September 11 and then up to Boston for the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on September 24.  UConn will use a national race, the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invite on October 15 in their final tune up for this year’s BIG EAST Championship.  The conference title race is scheduled for October 29 in Indianapolis, Ind.

This year’s NCAA Regional Championships are being held in Boston on November 12 and the NCAA title race is in Tallahassee, Fla. on November 20.
