IND vs ENG Live Score – 4th Test: England captain Joe Root wins toss, opt to field first; No place for Ashwin in Playing XI – Follow Live Updates – England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat first against England in the fourth match of the Five-match Test series here at the Kennington Oval, London on Thursday. India have made two changes Mohammad Shami was replaced by Umesh Yadav while Shardul Thakur comes in for injured Ishant Sharma. For England, Chris Woakes made a comeback in the side while Sam Curran replaced Jos Buttler.

Both Team captains at the toss

Virat Kohli: We would have bowled first as well but toss isn’t something you can control. Need to be prepared for either. We’re looking forward to putting runs on the board. Two changes – Ishant and Shami have niggles – Umesh and Shardul are back. For us, it’s about partnerships, we can’t focus too much on individuals. The opening partnerships have been good, it’s about getting more partnerships. We got a few days left on this tour, the series is poised nicely and there is going to be no shortage of effort from our side.

Joe Root: We’re going to bowl first. Going to make use of the overhead conditions. Looks like a good morning for bowling, we need to still hit the right lines and lengths, like we did at Headingley. We’ve got two changes – Ollie Pope in for Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes comes in for Sam Curran. Chris (Woakes) knows his body well and we all know about his performances. (On being the top-ranked batter) It does feel nice but obviously has no standing on this game.

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

England (Playing XI): Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, Dawid Malan, Joe Root(c), Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow(w), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Ollie Robinson, James Anderson

IND vs ENG Live Score – 4th Test: Team India aim to bounce back, England look to continue the momentum, Toss at 3:00 PM – Follow Live Updates- With the five-match Test series between India and England poised perfectly at 1-1, the focus heading into the fourth game remains on whether ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will finally be given a chance in the playing XI or not. The fourth Test will be played at the Oval, and traditionally the ground has offered assistance to the spinners so if the management wants to unleash the off-spinner, this would be the perfect opportunity. Few eyes rolled when Ashwin was not given a chance in the Headingley Test after being excluded in the first two Tests, but now it could be hard to explain the premier off-spinner’s exclusion if he once again fails to make the cut.

India Playing XI: Ravindra Jadeja fit & available for selection– India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun confirmed that India’s ace spinner Bharat Arun is fit and available for selection. The only spinner to have played in all three Test matches for India suffered an injury scare in the 3rd Test and had to be taken to hospitals for scans. However, Ravichandran Ashwin’s selection is still in limbo as the coach said it would depend on the conditions on match day. Follow Live updates on

“It was precautionary tests. Ravindra Jadeja was just made to wear the hospital suit for the scans and he posted a photo. He is absolutely fine,” Bharat Arun said.

That puts Ravichandran Ashwin in a difficult postion. Although historically Oval has aided spinners, London is seeing overcast conditions in the last few days. With enough moisture in the air and pitch, Virat Kohli is unlikely to feature two spinners. That could see only one spinner playing. With Kohli and the team management trusting Ravindra Jadeja’s batting ability, it could see Ravichandran Ashwin getting benched once again. However, Bharat Arun said a call will be taken as per conditions on matchday mroning.

“England are wary of Ashwin’s spin and it is unlikely that the Oval pitch will help spinners as it does historically. So, Ashwin’s inclusion will depend on the conditions. It depends on all these things. Ashwin is one of the best bowlers we have but it is unfortunate that he has not played so far. If there is an opportunity, they both (Ashwin and Jadeja) will be bowling in tandem,” Bharat Arun said.

However, the pace department is expected to be rotated with the team’s eye on workload management. Both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have played all three Tests and one of them could sit out in favour of Shardul Thakur. Furthermore, Ishant Sharma’s place is also in question after a disappointing show in the 3rd Test.

“To be totally honest, we are looking at the availability of fast bowlers in this series. I don’t think we should look too far ahead. We should look at fast bowlers with fresh legs we can play at any given time. So, it is being looked at purely for this series and not further. Prasidh Krishna is a precautionary inclusion. He has been included in the workload management of the pacers. There is nothing to add extra to it,” Bharat Arun said.

Arun also reiterated that India will look to bounce back from a humiliating an innings and 76-run loss in the 3rd Test and promised that the bowlers will come up with a better plan.

“We have been bowled out for 36 in the past and we have bounced back from that. We have our ways to bounce back and we have done it in the past, we can take the confidence from the past. I am sure you can see much more spirited performances in the coming two Tests,” he said.

India Playing XI 4th Test vs ENG: Who will play Ravichandran R Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja?

  • Ravindra Jadeja had to be taken to a hospital to undergo scans after suffering a knee injury. While it is not serious as previously thought, he could still be rested.
  • R Ashwin had bagged seven wickets on his County stint with Surrey and understands how the pitch works. Hence, he is all set to make a comeback to the Playing XI.
  • Jadeja has also struggled with the ball having scalped just two wickets in five innings in the series.
  • R Ashwin has already impressed in the County match while also scalping four wickets in Southampton without much help from the wicket in the WTC Final.
  • India could also play both spinners considering there hasn’t been rain or forecast going into the Test match at Oval. The pitch is dry and could assist spinners, meaning Ashwin and Jadeja will have big roles to play.

India Playing XI 4th Test vs ENG: Virat Kohli’s dilemma, should go with four pacers or maintain template

  • While Virat Kohli hinted at sticking with four pacers template, it could change depending on the conditions at Oval on match day.
  • Kohli already has clear instructions from the BCCI to manage the workload of the pacers especially of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.
  • Shami has bowled 96.5 overs in the three matches while Bumrah has bowled 108 overs in three weeks’ time. Considering the IPL 2021 and T20 World Cup, both could be rested for the 4th
  • That could see Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav join Mohammed Siraj in the pace department apart from two spinners.
  • But if Oval gets cloud cover like the 3rd Test at Headingley, Kohli is expected to go with four seamers combination — Mohd Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav for Jasprit Bumrah.
