India Playing XI 4th Test: IND vs ENG: Virat Kohli’s dilemma, play R Ashwin with R Jadeja or have four seamers in Playing XI for Oval Test

India Playing XI 4th Test vs ENG: Ashwin set to come back, who goes out? – After a humiliating an innings and 76-run defeat at Headingley, Virat Kohli & Co are off to London for the 4th Test at Oval against Joe Root’s resurgent England. But ahead of the crucial 4th Test, Kohli and the team management have a bowling combination dilemma to solve — to play both Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin or pick four-seamers. Follow IND vs ENG Live Updates on InsideSport.

In any case, Ishant Sharma is likely to be dropped after a disappointing show in the last match, returning with zero wickets for 95 runs. Ravindra Jadeja too hasn’t been impressive with the ball but he gives India the batting depth while the Oval pitch is set to be flatter than that of Leeds. Hence, playing two spinners is still on the cards.

But if Virat Kohli sticks with four seamers and a spinner template, Ravindra Jadeja who gave an injury scare could be benched with R Ashwin playing as a sole spinner. Furthermore, there will be changes in the pace department as well. Apart from Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah too could be rested in favour of Shardul Thakur while Mohammed Shami is the other one under the scanner to manage the workload with an eye on the T20 World Cup and the IPL 2021.

India Playing XI 4th Test vs ENG: Who will play Ravichandran R Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja?

  • Ravindra Jadeja had to be taken to a hospital to undergo scans after suffering a knee injury. While it is not serious as previously thought, he could still be rested.
  • R Ashwin had bagged seven wickets on his County stint with Surrey and understands how the pitch works. Hence, he is all set to make a comeback to the Playing XI.
  • Jadeja has also struggled with the ball having scalped just two wickets in five innings in the series.
  • R Ashwin has already impressed in the County match while also scalping four wickets in Southampton without much help from the wicket in the WTC Final.
  • India could also play both spinners considering there hasn’t been rain or forecast going into the Test match at Oval. The pitch is dry and could assist spinners, meaning Ashwin and Jadeja will have big roles to play.

India Playing XI 4th Test vs ENG: Virat Kohli’s dilemma, should go with four pacers or maintain template

  • While Virat Kohli hinted at sticking with four pacers template, it could change depending on the conditions at Oval on match day.
  • Kohli already has clear instructions from the BCCI to manage the workload of the pacers especially of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.
  • Shami has bowled 96.5 overs in the three matches while Bumrah has bowled 108 overs in three weeks’ time. Considering the IPL 2021 and T20 World Cup, both could be rested for the 4th
  • That could see Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav join Mohammed Siraj in the pace department apart from two spinners.
  • But if Oval gets cloud cover like the 3rd Test at Headingley, Kohli is expected to go with four seamers combination — Mohd Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav for Jasprit Bumrah.

“Rotation is bound to happen. It’s a very logical and sensible thing to do. You especially don’t want to push individuals to a place where they break. So, that conversation is very important and we will have that with individuals and see who is placed where physically and who needs to have a game off. You can’t expect with such turnaround time to play four Test matches in a row. So, we will assess who are the guys who need a number of days to recover and then we will be okay with the fifth one,” Virat Kohli said at the post-match press conference on Saturday.

As for batting combinations, despite a lot of talks regarding the middle-order, Ajinkya Rahane will play besides Cheteshwar Pujara. The top six will remain unchanged.
