Mavericks part ways with polarizing front office member

The Dallas Mavericks have parted ways with polarizing and controversial team executive Haralobos ‘Bob’ Voulgaris. Voulgaris began his career with the Mavs in 2018 as the Director of Quantitative Research and Development after rising to prominence as a successful sports bettor. He reflected on his tenure in Dallas with a few tweets.

“Just for clarification I asked to be let out of my contract, was denied. Since then I’ve been waiting for my contract to expire.”Haralobos Voulgaris

“Grateful for the experience, learned a lot, and got the chance to work with some great people.”Haralabos Voulgaris

But despite what his positive tweet suggests, Voulgaris’ time in Dallas wasn’t pretty. Per The Athletic, franchise superstar Luka Doncic developed a faulty relationship with Voulgaris.

This rift likely became a factor in the team’s decision to move on from Voulgaris. Because with Doncic as the center of the team’s future, it would make sense for the Mavericks to accommodate specifically to his needs and relationships.

Mysterious role in Dallas

Voulgaris’ role with the Mavericks was rather strange. Despite not holding a position at the very top of the organization, some described him as a ‘shadow GM.’

“Because Voulgaris’ influence was greater than his official role, those within the front office — and executives around the league who interacted with them — were often confused about who actually held power. ‘We had two general managers,’ a team source says.”Tim Cato and Sam Amick

The move is yet another instance of the Mavericks cleaning house this offseason. GM Donnie Nelson and head coach Rick Carlisle also departed after the Mavs’ first-round playoff loss, marking the beginning of a new era in Dallas.

The Mavs will enter the 2021-22 NBA season with a similar roster but revamped organization. Jason Kidd and Nico Harrison took over as new head coach and general manager, respectively. With Voulgaris out of the picture, perhaps Doncic will benefit from this fresh start.
