The youngster has already created history in her quest for her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open 2021. The 73rd ranked has defeated some of the biggest names in the world of tennis, including defending champion Naomi Osaka, fifth-seed Elina Svitolina and Angelique Kerber.

Who is Leylah Fernandez? 

  • Leylah Fernandez, is living a dream, days after her 19th birthday into the maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
  • She was born in Montreal but currently trains in Boynton Beach, Fla.
  • Notably, Fernandez is the youngest US Open semifinalist since Maria Sharapova in 2005.
  • The Canadain has beaten two Top 5 seeds. They are Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina. Besides this, she also brushed past 2016 US Open champion Angelique Kerber.
  • She became one of the youngest players to qualify in the US Open Semifinals after 2019 Roland Garros semifinalist Amanda Anisimova.
  • Interestingly, this is just Fernandez’s third Tour-level semifinal, and first above 250 level.
  • As of now, Leylah Fernandez is ranked World No.73, she will crack the Top 50 for the first time next Monday.
  • Fernandez was coached by her father, Jorge, a former Ecuadorian professional soccer player, during her early tennis career.
  • Her mother, Irine, is Filipino Canadian, and she is the second child among three sisters.
  • In 2019, Fernandez won the girls title at French Open and made her Top 100 debut a year later in September 2020.
  • Earlier this year, Fernandez won her first WTA title at the Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey, Mexico.
  • Her idol is Justine Henin. She got inspired to be a tennis pro after watching Spanish legend Rafael Nadal during lone of the French Open tournament.
