There was a dramatic night of World Cup qualifying in Europe as Erling Haaland netted for Norway against the Netherlands and Cristiano Ronaldo secured the international goal scoring record.

Haaland opened the scoring for his nation against the Dutch – with Louis van Gaal back in the dugout for the first time since his Manchester United exit in 2016 – but Davy Klaasen’s equaliser ensured the spoils were shared in Oslo.

Latvia secured their first win of the campaign with a 3-1 home win over Gibraltar, with all the goals in Riga coming after the break and Vladislavs Gutkovskis grabbed a double for the hosts.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the all-time international goal scoring record as he netted a dramatic late double to down Republic of Ireland, who came within minutes of a famous win in Faro.

Sheffield United defender John Egan had given Stephen Kenny’s side a shock lead after Ronaldo was denied from the penalty spot by goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu – on loan at Portsmouth from Manchester City.

Yet Ronaldo headed home in the 89 th minute to grab the record of 110 international goals and Portugal rescued victory from the jaws of defeat as the new Manchester United signing grabbed his second of the night in the sixth minute of stoppage time with another towering header.

That result means Fernando Santos’s side go top of Group A while the Irish remain without a point, as Luxembourg edged out Azerbaijan 2-1 in the evening’s other group game.

There was drama in Group D as ten-man France were held at home by Bosnia in a game in which Sevilla defender Jules Kounde – who missed out on a summer switch to Chelsea – was sent-off.

Antoine Griezmann had cancelled out Edin Dzeko’s opener in the first half but Kounde was dismissed six minutes after the break following a lunge on Arsenal ’s Sead Kolasinac.

France remain four points clear at the top of the group after Ukraine were held to a 2-2 draw in Kazakhstan in a stunning climax which saw Danylo Sikan give the visitors a stoppage time lead only to be denied by Ruslan Valiullin late equaliser.

It was a bad night for Scotland in Group F as they lost 2-0 in Denmark as Daniel Wass and Joakim Maehle both struck within a minute early in their encounter in Copenhagen.
