Huskies to Host UConn Challenge

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team (1-2) will compete in Gampel Pavilion for the first time this season when the Huskies host the UConn Challenge this weekend. The Huskies will face Lafayette (0-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking of CCSU (0-3) at 12:30 p.m. and Rutgers (2-1) at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

All matches of the UConn Challenge will stream through FloSports. Admission to the matches is free and masks are required indoors.

The Huskies went 1-2 at the Syracuse Tournament last weekend. UConn beat Albany before falling to Syracuse and Buffalo. Junior Allie Garland was named to the All-Syracuse Tournament Team.

This season, senior Caylee Parker leads UConn with 2.85 kills per set. Parker was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.

SCOUTING THE LAFAYETTE LEOPARDS

The Leopards will begin their season this weekend. Lafayette’s season opener match vs. Iona on Sept. 1 was postponed due to a power outage.

Lafayette went 2-5 in a condensed spring 2021 schedule. Senior outside hitter Leanna Deegan was named Preseason All-Patriot League and had 121 kills last season.

SCOUTING THE CCSU BLUE DEVILS

CCSU went 0-3 in the Maryland Invite last weekend with losses to Hofstra, Maryland and Virginia. Redshirt freshman Nyjha Marcelin led the Blue Devils with 2.92 kills per set while freshman Michelle Jung notched 1.29 blocks per set.

SCOUTING THE RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS

The Scarlet Knights went 2-1 in the Homewood Suites FGCU Invitational to start the season. Rutgers notched wins over USF and UMBC and fell to FGCU.

Beka Koadinovic leads the Scarlet Knights with 3.10 kills per set. Three Knights are averaging more than 1.00 blocks per set: Inna Balyjo (1.27), Shealyn McNamara (1.18) and Tina Grkovic (1.11).
